Dude Sewing: Simplicity 1021 Flannel Robe

Somebody likes his cozy new robe...!

Over the course of our first winter back in the States, I noticed that Tim was always chilly in the mornings while having his coffee. He needed a cozy robe to throw on over his PJs, so I set out to make him one for his birthday...

I used this classic robe pattern, Simplicity 1021, which was a dead simple sew. Dropped shoulders, patch pockets, neck line facing. Super quick. I cut him a size Large, which is where his measurements put him on the chart. Seems about right!

The only thing I changed up was to interface the waist tie so it wouldn't lose its shape (I find the un-interfaced one on my Suki kimono robe gets all crunched up on itself), and I tacked it down in the center back so Tim wouldn't lose it.

The fabric is cotton flannel shirting that I bought at Joann during the Christmas sales. Super soft, in a classic plaid, I love how it looks. A bit shifty to sew and kinda off-grain, if I'm honest, though. But for a robe like this, I didn't get too crazy about plaid matching.

I didn't have quite enough of the plaid (which was super narrow), to get the neck facing out of it. So, instead I used some of the long strips of lightweight denim left over from the class I was teaching for the facing, which looks pretty cool, I think:

Tim wasn't totally convinced that he was a robe guy and initially he wasn't comfortable with the wide sleeves and Grandpa-style. But after a few weeks of wearing it, he's totally comfy in it and it's helping keep this late-winter resurgence from giving him chills! He tends to wear it with his bamboo fleece Hudson pants, like he is here. A robe convert, for sure.
