I sent my mom some Mothers Day gifts: two 3/4 sleeve Deer & Doe Plantain t-shirts. She sent back photos!
I chose the Deer & Doe Plantain t-shirt for my Mom because she loves the one I made her a couple years ago. She wears it a ton and finds the 3/4 sleeves to be the perfect transition shirt for spring and/or fall, as well as the occasional cool summer day in New England.
The first version I made is from some
Art Gallery Fabrics knits from imagine gnats (affiliate link). My mom spotted it in my stash when she was in Bangkok and liked it, so I parted ways with it. Love those AG knits... squishy and soft with good recovery.
The second top was made from some striped cotton/spandex jersey we bought together in Hanoi, Vietnam. They had some really nice, thick jersey, fairly cheap.
I realized after I started cutting out this Plantain why the jersey was pretty inexpensive: the stripes are not straight! It was a bit of a beast to stripe match. I was only somewhat successful. But the shirt still looks great and is totally wearable.
Thanks for sending photos, Mom!
I've just reminded myself how great this pattern is. I do think that the key to its success is a knit with Lycra or spandex - I made one in a merino knit with no Lycra and it's just a bit too snug! Your mum looks very happy! Nice one :)
ReplyDeleteIt is such a great pattern, and free to boot! I agree, stretchier fabrics are best for Plantain. I have one I made myself that ended up a bit snug in the bust because it's less stretchy!
DeleteThey look so good on your mom, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I think she looks cute, too!
DeleteThe red one looks especially nice on her. Fortunately the stripes are narrow enough so it's not noticeable that they aren't straight. A daughter sewing for her mom, how nice is that!
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I have to pay her back for sewing for me when I was a kid!
DeleteAll the love for the Plantain pattern! They both fit really nicely and I particularly love the stripes - your hard work paid off!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Masha! Yes, much love for Plantain- such a great freebie! I've gotten more than my money's worth out of it ;-)
DeleteSuch a great pattern!!! It looks so good on your mom, and I am with her - it's the perfect transitional piece (or year round piece if you live in breezy NorCal) for cooler days. It also layers really well under a Linden Sweatshirt, which I bet your mom would also love ... just sayin'! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHa ha- maybe I'll make her a Linden, too!
DeleteNice work as always, Meg. Love the first one.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Molly!!
DeleteTwo beautiful Plantains. So lovely of you to sew for your mum.
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I figure she sewed for me for years, now it's my turn!!
DeleteAww Meg, these are both very nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Abbey!
DeleteYour Mom looks great in both of these!! I am just currently working on my Moms' mother's day garments - I'm a bad daughter. LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks, Heather! Ha ha, it's the thought that counts- your mom will appreciate the effort even if it's late!!
