Olive Denim Jenny Overalls

Don't you just love it when the perfect fabric and pattern combination lands in your lap?!

These are the latest pattern from Closet Case Patterns, the Jenny Overalls... perfectly vintage, yet still totally modern. I love the nipped-in high waist and super wide legs! Clearly made for the modern day Rosie the Riveter.

If overalls aren't your thing, the Jenny pattern includes an elegant pair of high-waisted pants or shorts, too! I know I've got a pair of those on my list. Maybe some sleek cropped pants for summer. I was a tester for this pattern, but used muslin for the cropped version of the pants and have been itching to make a real pair at some point.

The fabric for these overalls, which I immediately knew I would need to get my hands on, is an olive cross-hatch non-stretch Cone Mills denim from Imagine Gnats. It's rigid, medium weight (9 oz) and pure heaven. I love the unusual color and cool texture, and it was a delight to sew with... it's currently out of stock, but more is on the way! In the meantime, the shop is also carrying an equally beautiful coral-ish red version of the same denim, and I may have to buy some of that, too.

My Jenny Overalls are View A, the full length overalls, in a size 18. I am really happy with the fit!

For closures, I installed lapped zippers on both hips, in matte silver to match my other hardware (kit from Closet Case Patterns). The only change I made to the design was to make patch pockets by squaring off the curved slash front pocket and topstitching them. Heather has a free pattern piece for similarly squared off patch pocket here, though, if you don't feel like doing your own!

I topstitched all the seams in coordinating olive thread, but really wanted a pop of color. I decided to add some bartacks at the stress points on the bib and hip pockets. I took a poll on Instagram stories... gold, orange or red bar tacks? They were neck in neck, honestly, and I vacillated between all three.

I was rooting for orange, thinking I would end up with gold because it was the most "neutral," but also remembering how awesome the red thread on green fabric combination was from the shirt I made Tim a couple months back. In the end, the deciding factor was really what looked the best with the matter silver hardware, and that was the red.

The Jenny overalls require a sleek shirt underneath. This is my recently sewn Made by Rae Jade t-shirt, which worked perfectly tucked into the high waist.

I am super excited about about these Jenny overalls! Like I said, the perfect combination of fabric and pattern...
