Sometimes Tim benefits from me teaching a sewing class... some time alone, and a test garment if he's lucky!
These are Simplicity 8519, a "slim fit" lounge pants for men and boys. They are elastic waist PJ pants with slash pockets at the hip and a button fly.
Since I was using this pattern, along with the female equivalent, Simplicity 8518 for a beginner garment sewing class I was teaching at Generator, I decided to make a version for Tim as my practice garment. I like to make up the pattern in advance to determine whether I want to change any construction steps, etc.
For the class, I wanted to skip the button fly for simplicity and time's sake. As a result, I had to adjust waistband construction by using main casing piece and "right front casing" piece sewn together to make a full waistband. I obviously skipped the fly facing, etc., and just sewed the front legs together as if there was no fly. It worked out just fine!
For Tim, I chose size large to match his hip measurement. This turned out to be a pretty good fit for him. They are slimmer than other PJ pants, as advertised, but not too tight! He is finding the back rise to be a little bit low, though, like it shows some crack when he sits or bends over. He's got a bit of a bum relative to other dudes, so maybe he needs a full bum adjustment next time. Still totally wearable for PJ/lounge pants, though.
The fabric I used for his pajama pants is a navy cotton flannel I got from Imagine Gnats a couple years ago, nice and thick and soft. I believe it's from Robert Kaufman, but don't quote me on that. It will be nice and warm for winter, which is quickly approaching!
Here is a bonus photo of some of my students proudly showing off their versions of Simplicity 8519... I think they really enjoyed the challenge of making the pockets!:
