I've been in need of a simple black t-shirt to wear with some of my louder me-made skirts (for example: my yellow Veronika). A black t-shirt that is a bit dressier, though than some of the other, slouchier t-shirts I've been making of late. I wanted it to be appropriate for wearing to work and/or out and slim enough to be tucked in without too much bulk.
Not the most exciting make, I know, but a necessary basic. Not the easiest to photograph, either.
I thought the Mesa dress from Seamwork Magazine had a nice neckline, looked fairly slim cut and had a good not-too-short, not-too-long sleeve length, so I decided to make myself a t-shirt from it.
Size wise, I graded out one size at the waist and hips as it's pretty slim cut - in the finished measurements, it looks like the hip part has like 4 inches of negative ease (?!).
I laid the Plantain t-shirt pattern over it to estimate a good length and traced the Plantain's slightly curved hem onto the Mesa pattern. I hemmed it up 1 inch with my twin needle:
For fabric, I used some Robert Kaufman Laguna jersey in onyx from the Imagine Gnats shop (affiliate link), which is lovely stuff, albeit a teeny bit curly on the edges.
Next time I think perhaps I'll shorten the neckband a bit. I barely had to stretch it at all to fit the neckline, and, as a result, the neckline feels a bit like it'll stretch out of shape if you breathe on it too hard.
Otherwise, I'm happy with the final result- it serves its purpose!
Also: damn, I love this skirt. Time to make more!
