Organic Twill Pietra Shorts

Have legs, will wear shorts!!

I have to thank Grace at Maker Mountain Fabrics and Gillian, well, you know Gillian, for inspiring me to make shorts. The first shorts I've sewn for myself in years (literally years, the last pair I made was in 2014)!

Grace had me thinking about shorts generally and Gillian made some amazing denim Pietra Shorts that had me considering heavier weight pieces of fabric in my stash that could work for the Pietra Shorts (I really adore the Pietra Pants I made during testing!).

The fabric for my shorts is organic cotton twill in plum from Organic Cotton Plus. The piece is a remnant from the Lander Pants I made a couple years back, which I sadly had to give away because they were just too snug on me. Luckily, they went to a good home.

The twill remnant was just over a yard and I was able to eke out these size 18 Pietra shorts. I didn't make any fit changes; just went for it. Initially I would have thought a twill like this (7 oz) would be too heavy for the Pietra Pants, but it actually works really well. #SewingLeftovers for the win!

I love how the front waist facing acts to smooth out the front zone really nicely, especially in a heavier weight fabric.

I'll admit: I am still apprehensive about shorts. My upper legs are a sensitive zone for me. I feel a bit exposed in these shorts, and yet I also love the way they look at the same time. Are my legs pale, cellulite-y and covered in bruises and mosquito bites? Yes. But I am going to wear these shorts anyway.

Here I'm wearing them with my Seamwork Adria, a cropped top. In reality, I can probably only handle one boundary-pushing garment at a time, so I imagine I'll likely wear these shorts with a regular t-shirt and the top with a full length skirt or pants.

I'm very pleased with these shorts! They turned out really nice, as far as shorts go. Thanks for the inspiration, Grace and Gillian!

  1. Meg, Your legs are absolutely fine! This combo looks great on you. I have recently returned to wearing shorts (I have a similar shape to yours) via the Landers in fact. Next on my list are the Pietro shorts and I am encouraged to see how good they look on you. I know what you mean about too many boundary pushing garments at a time, but looking at the way these two work for you,I am encouraged to try my next Celio top without the extra 2" I added first time round :)

  2. I see nothing wrong with your legs! Embrace it and be happy you have Legs! On another note, if makes you feel better; you can always lengthen them a bit. I did mine 2" longer and hits me right in the middle of my leg... I am very happy with the length adjustment.

  3. It's funny (not all in a haha way) how we see ourselves. I've always been SO jealous (in a good way) of your gorgeous legs. Bruises and mosquito bites? Who cares! Cellulite? Where? I'll see your cellulite (except I don't see it!) and raise you 150%. But all of this is to say I feel you ... I'm not so much into shorts for myself either and I live in freakin' Florida. How ridiculous is that? But I "compensate" with dresses and skirts that cover MY cellulite. LOL! You look great! The shorts look great! Do what feels good.

    1. Yes, ME TOO! I have always said "what nice legs" whenever you post a pic of yourself in a skirt or dress. The shorts look great on you.

  4. Super cute and love the color!

Totally get that you are a bit self conscious but also, we can be our own worst critics. You look great!

  5. Those shorts look fantastic on you!

  6. See, My very first impression was perfect length and perfect shirt
My second thought was great fit and great color
It's the kind of summer casual outfit that is two levels up
    dressier and more put together

  7. These look great on you. And I hear you about the bug bites. Isn't summer in the Northeast buggy? Yuck. I have never given up on shorts- love them no matter what my size. We live on the beach and I wear shorts and a swimsuit all summer long. I'm going to try these- they look good on everyone I've seen. Sorry I didn't call you when we were in VT. We only went into Burlington 1 day in the pouring rain and left by noon. Lake Champlain was beautiful and we spent all our time on the water. My son got a job working for a school district, so I will be back.

  8. Embrace summer and wearing shorts, you look fantastic, so well put together and the comfort factor is way high. I am of an age to wear what I like when I like and these look great. Thank you.

  9. I can only echo what everyone else has been saying: You look great! And your clothes look great ;) First thing I noticed was the gorgeous color and structure of your shorts (harmonizes nicely with your skin), but then I was distracted by your top. It just blew me over how much a slightly looser top benefits from some structure via the darts. It looks amazing! Immediately fantasizing about making myself a similar one. Maybe the Cashmerette Dartmouth would work cropped?

  10. The shorts are so cute on you! Good job!

  11. Timely post, thanks Meg. I have a short length of twill in my stash and I've been thinking about using it for the Pietra shorts...and also thinking that the fabric would be too heavy, LOL.

Yours look do YOU! I'm shorts shy, but do wear them in the summer sometimes. I find if I pay attention to the other, footwear, accessories...I feel best!

  12. Meg, I love this whole outfit! These shorts are 😍

  13. Meg!! These are gorgeous on you!! I love that top too! Your legs are beautiful and strong! I used to feel the same way as my legs are super pale, jiggly, and bruise easy, not to mention mosquitoes love me, but shorts make the hot weather so much more bearable and the only way to get a little colour on your legs is to get them out there.

  14. This whole outfit looks gorgeous and cool and elevated. I love that color combination, too!
