Fleece-Backed Velvet Two Piece Setacular

Merry Christmas from me and this ridiculous two piece setacular I just made!

I don’t often buy novelty fabric, but sometimes it just feels right. I found this unique fabric at my local secondhand craft supply shop, The Makery. It still had the tags on it from Mood and was so funky (and in my favorite olive-y green color!) that I had to buy it.

It’s a velvet exterior bonded to a lambswool-esque fleece on the inside. Both cozy and festive!

The fabric was a beast to work with, though, being both super thick from the fleece and quite slippery from the velvet. I had to make some choices, such as leaving raw edges instead of hemming because it was too bulky and didn’t press well. I just zigzagged 3/8 inch from the edge to make sure the two substrates didn’t separate.

I also had to be careful with my pattern choices and sizing because the fabric was so thick and had minimal stretch.

I opted for the (free!) Sew House Seven Elemental Pencil Skirt pattern. But, I sized up to a size 24 so the finished measurements were close to my body measurements since the pattern normally calls for 50% stretch fabric and negative ease. I skipped the waistband facing and just sewed the elastic directly to the skirt, folded it over and topstitched. I shortened the skirt 5 inches due to fabric limitations.

The top is the Paper Theory LB Pullover pattern, also sized up to a size 24. I cut the hem allowances off the sleeves, but left them on the body for a bit of extra length on this quite cropped top.

I love how silly and fun this outfit is, but I also feel like I can wear both pieces separately- the top with jeans, and the skirt with a button down and one of my boiled wool vests.
