It's not quite full-on tomato season in Vermont, but my tomatoes are certainly growing. Lots of blossoms and a few little green fruits.
Here I am, showing off my growing tomatoes (and potatoes) while wearing a tomato two piece. Too much?
I have been wanting an excuse to buy some of the cheerful Fluid + Drape Roma tomato fabric collection, and the #SewFruity25 challenge hosted by @blossomsandwich gave me the excuse I wanted.
The Roma collection is fun, summery tomatoes hand silkscreened on either cotton or a linen/cotton blend. The fabric I chose is the tomatoes on a hot pink background printed on the linen cotton blend, which appears to be sold out.
I love the vibrant pink and the lightweight, breathable fabric.
I considered making a tomato dress, but ultimately landed on a two-piece set that I could wear together, or mix and match as needed. I wanted something breezy for summer. Something that feels like it's barely touching my body, but still provides some sun coverage.
I landed on the Seamwork Bo for the top. I've made this boxy top several times over the years and I love how the cropped silhouette pairs with a high waisted skirt or pants. The black Bo I made many years back is still worn weekly in summer.
For this Bo, like my others, I cut a size 14, which is several sizes down from what I measure into, but still delightfully breezy and oversized.
Instead of using the neck facing, since I was cutting it close on fabric, I finished the neckline with floral bias tape from my stash, originally from Daiso:
For the skirt part of the outfit, I chose another pattern I've made before and loved: the Montoya Mayo Ejiro Skirt, a lovely half-circle skirt with a flat front/elastic back waistband. I thought the twirly and comfy skirt would be perfect for my tomato fabric.
I went down one size from my last Ejiro skirt to a size 10, both to fit the skirt onto the length of fabric I had, but also because the waist was a little big on my last skirt.
Just loving this set! Great color, great movement, great breathability... so much fun. Definitely a welcome and much-needed distraction from the news! Bring on tomato season.
