I made a cheerful birthday dress for myself from a much-loved fabric from my stash!
The fabric is a gorgeous Nani Iro Pocho double gauze, a beautiful, soft fabric with irregular, watercolored spots on it.
You might remember this line of fabrics had a chokehold on the online sewing community back in the day.
I received some of this fabric for my birthday in 2014, and I've been sitting on it since then. It felt too special to cut into for some reason. But a birthday dress for myself seems like an appropriate use of this pretty fabric!
For my dress, I wanted to maximize the fabric. I ended up "hacking" the boxy Matchy Matchy Sewing Club Craft Studio Tee into a dress.
I had made this top earlier this year and liked how the pattern fit. This is a 2XL Craft Studio Tee.
I further cropped the tee by about 5 inches and added a width of fabric skirt gathered skirt that I then cinched in more with some narrow elastic at the waistband.
Since I used the whole width of fabric for the skirt, the selvage is visible on one side. It's a pretty selvage, though, so I decided to make it a feature.
I'm pretty chuffed with this dress. So comfortable. So pretty. And it really highlights this beautiful fabric that's been aging in my stash for over a decade!
