Muppet-y Wool Loren Jackets

My sister referred to these fabrics as "Muppet-y" and I think that's a pretty accurate description.

On a trip to the Boston area earlier this year she and I stopped by a fabric shop I had been meaning to check out: Sewfisticated Discount Fabrics in Somerville.

When I was googling around for their website, I found their Instagram, which says they're closing the Somerville location at the end of 2024- bummer!

Honestly, it's a bit of a weird place, with many fabrics falling into the category of "fell off the back of a truck." But obviously a few gems and the price is right.

We did a beeline towards these fuzzy, Muppet-y novelty wools, labeled "wool fancies" by the shop. Kinda boucle, maybe? Whatever it is, I'll be vacuuming up pieces of it and pulling pieces of it out of my mouth for years to come after making these jackets.

They were remnants, somewhere between 2 and 3 yard each. We picked out a purple-y wool with stripes in blues and greens for me, and a purple-y one with reds and magenta mottled in for my sister.

My sister and I discussed what pattern would work with the fabrics. We considered lined jackets, but after feeling the fabric and deciding it wasn't too itchy, we opted for the unlined Style Arc Loren Jacket for more of a coatigan feel.

My sister's Loren is size 12, and mine is size 20.

We both wanted full length sleeves, so I cut the sleeves as-is from the pattern, but only took a 1 inch hem vs the super deep hem the pattern calls for.

On both jackets I ended up hand stitching all the hems, as well as hand stitching the deep collar/front facing down. I had started by machine stitching them, but didn't like how it looked. The hand stitched hems just disappear into the fuzzy wool.

These Loren Jackets are so much fun! I haven't quite figured out how to wear mine yet; I don't love this pairing. But we'll work on it!
