How cute does Tim look in this cowl I knit?!
This is the
Drea Renee Knits / Andrea Mowry Day & Night Cowl. It's worked flat on the bias, and then seamed, and includes an alternating color/slipped stitched design that I really liked. It's got lovely i-cord edges, which was a first for me.
The Night & Day cowl was fun to knit, and I was able to get into a nice flow once I got the hang of the stitch pattern.
The pattern uses slipped stitches throughout to pull a stripe of the the previous row upwards for a contrast.
I notice that mine are much more twisted than they are in the pattern sample photos. I slipped them knit-wise on both the knit and purl rows- perhaps that's the issue? In any case, I think it still looks cool, and I noticed others have had the same result.
The shape of the cowl is really interesting. I was having trouble envisioning how the shape would work it as I knit, but once it's blocked and sewn together, it sits and drapes so nicely!
I love this colorway- blues, turquoise, greens, oranges and golds throughout. I love how the colors change as I knit and how they look in contrast with the solid blue!
The blue is Knit Picks Swish DK, a superwash merino, in the colorway "Mimic," described as "A dark navy blue color with violet undertones."
I say this because Tim said "I like that purple yarn" and I disagreed, stating that it was not purple and argued that it was the same color as his jacket, which he also calls purple. It's firmly navy in my mind. A navy with purple in it, yes, but navy. We will continue to disagree about this for the rest of our lives.
This is the largest size cowl in the pattern, size 4/adult large. After blocking mine ended up a bit larger than that, which is fine, because it fits Tim really well.
Speaking of blocking, I feel it was really important here to pin during blocking get the curly edges of the cowl to lay flat. I ended up buying my first blocking mats for this purpose- I got this set locally.
I'm so happy with this project. I need to remember that not every yarn needs to be a sweater, and that little fun projects like this are very fun and satisfying!
