A springy sweater!
I've been doing a lot of knitting this winter... keeping my hands busy seems to be somewhat soothing when everything feels out of control.
This sweater is a Andrea Mowry/Drea Renee Knits pattern, the Metamorphic Sweater. The Metamorphic Sweater is a striped pullover with ribbed cuffs, knit in stockinette, but then flipped so the "wrong side” or purl side ends up being the outside.
It has faux seams, made with slipped stitches and purls, on the center front and back of the sweater and on the sleeves and side seams.
I already had this pattern in my stash since November of 2023, but Spincycle Yarns announced a knit-a-long for this pattern in late January that kick started this project for me. A good excuse to cast on!
I made an impulse purchase of a kit from Metamorphic kit from Spincycle that included their Metamorphic and Dyed in the Wool yarns.
The Metamorphic yarn is a DK weight American wool and merino wool yarn made from recycled from mill waste- I got the #36 marl colorway, which was a light green marled with grey.
The Dyed in the Wool yarn is a sport weight wool yarn- I got the Rabbit Hole colorway, which has super bright pinks with some dusty blues, oranges, browns and other colors all twisted in.
I just love how these yarns paired together, and it was a bit addictive to just knit another row to see what color stripe I would end up with next. I think that's how I finished this project so quickly!
I also love how the stripes the Dyed in the Wool made landed on the sweater- the placement of the most dramatic pink stripe across the yoke is perfect!
I ended up going down a needle size from what the pattern suggests- mostly knitting with size 5 needles for the body and size 3 for the ribbing.
I made a size 6, which has a 52.25 inch bust, and that worked out great. I think the only change I made was to knit the neckband and sleeve cuffs a little bit longer (like 2.5 inches) than the pattern called for.
For my size (well for sizes 6, 7 and 8), the kit they sent me had 3 skeins of Metamorphic and 4 of Dyed in the Wool. But I only used 2 skeins of Metamorphic and 2 of Dyed in the Wool somehow. Not sure why I have so much left! Gotta think of another project now...
I steam blocked my sweater because that's what the Spincycle yarn label said was best. Definitively not as dramatic as wet blocking, but it worked to give me some length and relax the stitches.
I may do some more steaming to try to get some of the wrinkles out of the back- I think I did a better job on the front.
I really love how this sweater turned out- so happy with it! Great fit, beautiful springy colors, lovely texture.
