Pinafores and glowingly pale winter legs!
This is the latest from Helen's Closet: the York Pinafore!
Helen describes the York Pinafore as "a playful addition to your handmade wardrobe" and "a modern take on a classic pinafore dress with a cocoon shape." You can read more in her introductory blog post here.
I made View A, which has cool, angled scooped pockets that are stitched into the side seam. It's got a low neckline and is knee length.
View B is a shorter length with a higher neckline and kangaroo pocket.
This is the size XL, although some changes have been made to the pattern since testing to take it in a bit at the waist and hip. The neckline has been raised slightly and length added to the skirt.
The York Pinafore is incredibly quick to sew up because it's just two pieces and the pockets (or pocket, depending). No closures, nothing complicated. The neckline, armholes and pocket edges are all finished with a bias tape facing.
I used packaged bias tape for my York Pinafore. The fabric is lightweight (4 oz, maybe?) denim from Joann. I also used golden jeans topstitching thread to sew on the binding, topstitch the pockets and do some bar tacks. It's a little bit difficult to see in my photos, but you can imagine!
I've paired my York here with my striped Bento Tee. But Helen has style it with tank tops, cropped tops, and even turtlenecks! I think it's an interesting layering piece that can work across seasons depending on your fabric choice.
I'll be honest and say that I was a bit apprehensive about the idea of this look on me before I sewed the York up, but it's pretty damn cute on, I think. Modern, fun, funky. Definitely unique! I'm not sure I've convinced my husband, though. I asked him what he thought of this outfit and he said "It's very... '90s." I'm not taking it as an insult. The '90s are back, right?
I love your version of the York Meg. I've worn my denim version also with a stripey Tshirt heaps. Do you think you'll make a version for work?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma! I love your version. Hmmm- I could probably wear this to work in a dressier fabric. I have some wool suiting in my stash- maybe a winter version to wear with tights and a turtleneck?
DeleteI love how you’ve styled this! It looks amazing . I absolutely love those big pockets!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! The York pockets are the absolute best!
DeleteLove this pattern.
ReplyDeleteme, too! It's so cute!
DeleteThis is really cute on you! I like how you styled it with the slightly looser striped top. The proportions really work. I think it would be nice for Fall too, in a wool with a turtle neck underneath. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, I definitely think it transitions really well across the seasons depending on what you pair it with!
DeleteI love it too. In fact, I habe juat taped the pattern!
ReplyDeleteYes! This pattern has your name written all over it.
DeleteVery cute on you! Love the striped shirt under it too!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! :-)
DeleteThis is very cute on you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carolyn! I was worried it might be too cute... cutesy. But in the end I like it!
DeleteI do like it on you! I had a jumper like this in the 90s after I had my kids. I wore it to death. And I loved the big pockets. They say you shouldn't wear things again if you wore it the first time around, so I think that leaves me out. But it is a style that's so comfortable. Maybe...
ReplyDeleteYou should make one! I try not to pay attention to what "they" say ;-)
DeleteI think things we wore the first time and did not like , those we do not have to do again. Things we got as hand me downs and always hated, those things we can skip. Things we loved? DO OVER for sure!
DeleteI love this on you - looks super cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteI read your review, bought and taped pattern and made a black denim one all on Monday night that I wore to work on Tuesday. Great pattern.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! You are so quick! Glad you like it.
DeleteI love your York. I was a bit apprehensive about this pattern but I have purchased it and can't wait to make it. I love the '90s' so really have to make it now
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! The '90s are back!!
DeleteLove this. Thinking about how to size it up a bit. Seems to be very versatile.
